Energy Interop Server & System® (EISS®)

Energy Interop Server & System® (EISS®) is an energy management platform based on the OpenADR 2.0b specification that automates secure, scalable, near real-time, two-way communications from energy providers to commercial, industrial, and residential consumers of energy demand response, pricing, and telemetry data. The primary objectives of the specification are to: increase grid reliability, optimize consumer pricing, and enhance consumer response choice. The EISS® platform provides server side communications and client side interfaces.

What does EISS® do?

The IPKeys Energy Interop Server & System® enables near real-time, two-way communication of key energy reporting data between energy providers and their customers. The system equips providers with the following capabilities:

  • Send energy pricing data including Locational Marginal Price (LMP), hourly, or some other type;
  • Send Demand Response events and receive confirmation of curtailment;
  • Receive notification of Price Responsive Demand (PRD) curtailment actions;
  • Easily manage and automatically forward customer notifications; and
  • Monitor load behavior in near real time.

EISS® Architecture

EISS® comprises four key OpenADR 2.0b-certified technology components: the information exchange server (EISS® VTN Server), client-side hardware interfaces (EISS® Box VEN, EISS® Cube VEN), client side software (EISS® Client), and client side web-based information dashboard (EISS® Online).

EISS® VTN Server is an OpenADR 2.0b-certified Virtual Top Node (VTN) or server that automates secure, scalable two-way communications from energy providers to commercial, industrial and residential consumers of demand response, price, and telemetry data. This server can be located at the highest infrastructure level (e.g. Utility Company), at an aggregator level, or at the managed facility. EISS® VTN Server allows energy providers the following communications capabilities:

  • Send energy pricing data including Locational Marginal Price (LMP), hourly, or some other type;
  • Send Demand Response events and receive confirmation of curtailment;
  • Receive notification of Price Responsive Demand (PRD) curtailment actions;
  • Easily manage and automatically forward customer notifications; and
  • Monitor load behavior in near real time.
EISS® Box VEN is an OpenADR 2.0b-certified hardware client to the EISS® VTN Server. EISS® Box allows the EISS® VTN Server to interface with existing building equipment so that it can automatically react to Demand Response (DR) and price events. EISS® Box primarily serves the commercial and industrial markets (EISS® Cube is the hardware client that serves the residential and small business markets).

EISS® Box enables interoperability by translating and communicating from EI and OpenADR 2.0b protocols to provide control signals to a wide variety of devices (e.g., HVAC, solar and wind generation, pool pumps, lighting, ice storage) using various relevant device protocols and standards such as BACnet and Modbus.

EISS® Box can also serve as an interval data logger for equipment within a 7 meter radius to provide near real time telemetry.

Set up and configure an EISS® Box

EISS® Cube VEN is an OpenADR 2.0b-certified hardware client to the EISS® VTN Server. EISS® Box VEN allows the EISS® VTN Server to interface with existing building equipment so that it can automatically react to Demand Response (DR) and price events. EISS® Cube primarily serves the residential and small business markets (EISS® Box is the hardware client that serves the commercial and industrial markets).

EISS® Cube enables interoperability by translating and communicating from EI and OpenADR 2.0b protocols to provide control signals to a wide variety of devices (e.g., HVAC, pool pumps, electric vehicle chargers, water heaters).

EISS® Client is the OpenADR 2.0b-certified software client designed for use by equipment manufacturers for equipment requiring OpenADR 2.0b enablement. EISS® Client incorporates IPKeys’ OpenADR 2.0b-certified Virtual End Node (VEN).

EISS® Client Hardware Requirements
  • Full Java 6 support (“Headless” is acceptable);
  • ARM 9 processor, v5 or greater;
  • 56 MB RAM, including Java; and
  • 20 MB static memory.

IPKeys Power Partners customizable EISS® Online dashboard provides detailed power usage, event, pricing, and emissions reports. The EISS® Online dashboard is provided to our customers in conjunction with our Demand Response (DR) Program services. The EISS® Online real-time reports provide visibility and insight into each site’s DR performance during power events thereby enabling providers to more quickly and effectively react to improve event performance. Current and historical electric consumption interval data can be analyzed in detail to reveal operational anomalies and practices that may negatively impact power costs. Reports are provided for individual sites and can be aggregated across the enterprise.

Open Automated Demand Response (OpenADR) is an open and standardized way for electricity providers and system operators to communicate Demand Response signals with each other and with their customers using a common language over any existing IP-based communications network. As the most comprehensive standard for Automated Demand Response, OpenADR has achieved widespread support throughout the industry. IPKeys is certified in the OpenADR 2.0b profile specification that prescribes implementation requirements and guidance for the construction of OpenADR enabled devices or systems.

EISS® Online Information Dashboard

A key component of the EISS® solution package is the fully-customizable EISS® Online Information Dashboard that enables energy providers with 24/7 secure access to detailed and actionable power consumption reports including: electric usage reports, event records, pricing reports, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reports.

The OpenADR Alliance is fostering the development, adoption, and compliance of the Open Automated Demand Response (OpenADR) standard through collaboration, education, training, testing, and certification. The OpenADR Alliance intends to work with related organizations such as the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel, Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB), Utilities Communications Architecture International User’s Group (UCAIug), Wi-Fi Alliance™, ZigBee Alliance™ and others as appropriate. IPKeys’ EISS solution is OpenADR 2.0b certified at both the server and the end point by the OpenADR Alliance.

Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management, and IPKeys Technologies, an expert in Smart Grid communications technology, have partnered to deliver a fully Automated Demand Response (AutoDR) and Energy Management Information System (EMIS) solution for utilities’ and commercial and industrial (C&I) customers. Through this solution Schneider Electric and IPKeys Technologies enable the collaborative utility-customer relationship necessary to make Smart Grid a reality.

IPKeys Technologies, an expert in Smart Grid communications technology, and Connexx Energy, Inc., a subsidiary of Lynxspring, Inc. and leading developer of open technologies for building automation and energy management solutions, have partnered to deliver an OpenADR 2.0 a-certified Virtual End Node (VEN) driver for the Niagara AX® platform. Through this solution, IPKeys Technologies and Connexx Energy will provide an OpenADR 2.0b-certified driver for Niagara AX, permitting rapid deployment of standards-based AutoDR solutions to the Niagara community.
